The Bay Area Rapid Transit system relies on electrical power to operate a 104 mile long, 43 station commuter rail system serving San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties. As of August, 2006, its average weekday ridership was 330,000 people. In 2005, the American Public Transportation Association honored it as the Number One Transit System in America.
