The Bay Area Rapid Transit system relies on electrical power to operate a 104 mile long, 43 station commuter rail system serving San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties.   Operating since 1972, BART uses its 669 rail cars to carry more than 330,000 commuters to various destinations throughout the Bay Area each day,

BART plays a major role in reducing traffic congestion in the nation's second most congested region, while also serving as a key piece of California's challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.  It is estimated that passengers who choose to use the BART system rather than commute to work with their vehicles save more than 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
